200 year old Shield back

This job starts with 5  probably 100 year old dining plates.

Below shows the plates stripped and ready to be restored.

The webbing could be ripped with ones fingers is a good guage that the webbing life has expired.

 The amount of tack holes and the shade of the wood are good guages of age.

 Here below, stripped and glued.

 Natual horsehair dusted out and replaced.

 This glue is great for furniture repair.

Below the stuffings replaced and ready for fabric.

 And the finished plates all mirror tailored as shown below.

Ready to be installed on the frames.

Along with this job is this very old Hepplewhite arm chair.

I would say was created before the steel era since no springs were involved.

Early 1800's or possibly before.

 This removal of this bottom trim wood for upholstering is very rare.

 Some repairs on the seat strapping and tailored this up in the same manner as before.

Hand sewn corner pleats with traditional gimp nails.

 And the finished piece.

And the last pair of shield backs that have well over a hundred years on them.

 All the tacks removed.

 And the new fabric worked up together for mirrored tailoring.

Hand sewn pleats.

And the decorative tacks hand set on all sides.

Dodge pickup 1970 upholstery

I worked in an auto trim shop in the late 1980's for a while.

Let's really dress up this 1970 Dodge pickup upholstered bench seat.

 This isn't the original upholstery.

Gonna dress up the exposed steel hinges.

 The owner chose the tan fabric from a book. The black is from the in house stock.

A good quality marine grade vinyl to keep the "tough" truck motife'.

Below shows the half inch sew foam glued and channelled in house, with very strait lines.

 After 42 years the stuffings need some attention.

 Fresh burlap just like original.

 Stuffings reset with additional cotton.

 And the cover all tailored ready to be fit.

 And the finished bench seat.

 The hindge areas of upholstery seats often become a problem.

These worked up nice and clean.

Moorish window fabric chair

A friend of mine gifted me this chair from his storage he has had in storage for years.

 He is an antique wood artisan and dates this piece from the 1840's.

Below you can see the original frame that was beefed up probably 30 years ago.

 Whoever beefed up this chair did a very nice job.

What a solid chair in great shape.

Note the original arm post.

Well after removing the old coats cotton lots of tacks to the cheesecloth this inspected up real nice after freshening up the exposed wood.

Check out what seems to be the original wheel assemblies in really great shape.

And a pic of the base from the bottom. Clean for sure.

This fabric from my in stock fabric library is a Moorish window design which has been in use in europe for hundreds of years.

It kinda could be considered contemorary but it's not.

And the completed piece.

Under lined with fresh coats of cotton throughout.

French love seat

This small french provincial love seat frame sure has a lot of style.

The fabric comes from a textile mill outside Paris France.

With the removing of lots of staples to get a clean line on the finished wood, I am ready to tailor up this 36 inch repeat fabric.

 Here below the outside back.

 And the outside arms.

 And the inside with the centering throughout.

 And with the completed seat cushion.  I used the smaller 4/32 piping cord.

 I allowed the tailoring of the seat cushion to flow  as oppose to the heart centering on the cushion as the vine flows with the inside back fabric onto the down cushion.

 And the front view.

The custom gimp arrives from Boston the piece will be complete.

Here it is.

 Nice gimp that ties in well.
