Blue Skies & Blue Sofa

While I was upholstering this, the fall weather in New Hampshire was so nice.
Beautiful deep blue skies and beautiful blue fabric to match.
Temps in the 40's in the morning and mid 70's in the mid day with no humidity.
Here is a sofa estimated to be 70 years old.
I believe I upholstered this sofa about 16 years ago in a green cut cotton velvet which is not available any more.
The frame and stuffings are still in fantastic shape.
Below shows the machine sewn, then hand sewn decking with a thin coat of cotton.
A lot of upholsterers tend to overstuff older pieces, which does the pieces no favors as "overstuffing" is a new way to tailor modern day disposable furniture.

And the old fabric removed and ready to tailor up the new inside arms.
The outside arms with piping curved to draw out the curved arm, backed and lined.
Same with the outside back.

Deep fitted arm covers showing the edges surged to prevent fraying.
The pattern set match exactly the pattern to the frame, inside and out!
Matched and centered seat and back cushions.

This fabric available for purchase here in shop.
This sofa design wastes no space in a living room, it was designed to serve.

1890's sleepy hollow

I completely restored this piece of furniture.
from the re-gluing of the frame, hand tieing the coil springs and replacement and refurbishment of the horse hair.

The chair has a petite sitting height of 14 inches.
the back height is 33 inches.
What a great access chair or bedroom chair.
This newly designed transitional fabric really helps draw out the character and age with a fresh look!

This item for sale.

New Hampshire Practical Upholstery

Sofa's were really designed in times past to really be functional and to be passed from one generation to another.
No trips to the local "recycling center" and then off to the local corporate box store to buy generic mostly disposable furniture.
This sofa does not suffer from over engineering or designed to wear out.
The existing upholstery fabric has seen 40 years or so.
New Hampshire upholstery at it's best.
20 miles east of keene New Hampshire and 25 miles west of Nashua New Hampshire.
Lots of tacks taken out of the frame so to be able to tailor this piece up proper.
The inside arms needed some extra attention.
Now is the time to do it.
 New traditional jute bcm webbing.
The natural horse hair takes hundreds of years to break down.
This looks just like it was the day the sofa was upholstered when it was originally created.

Lots of time tailoring up the deep tufted arms.
Looking down on the arm top.

 Hand sewn decking.
The fabric centered and level throughout.
This fabric was end cut.  Meaning only 55 inches across the fabric. additional pieces needed to be tailored throughout on this full 6 foot sofa.
Below is one of 4 seams for the seat cushion.
The seam runs vertical in the middle of this picture.
And the two on the nosing, below the seat cushion
 And the inside back seam.
And patterned match sewn for the outside back.

Extra buttons are kept just behind the zipper,
in case of a popped button.

Additional strapping added just to be sure.
The heavy duty canvas strips and burlap in really good shape still.
And the outside backed and lined with a natural coat of thin cotton.

I considered it would take 12 yards to do this sofa.
there is 15 inches extra.
These surged arm covers should really help extend the fabric life of the sofa.

Note the outside arms and back the patterns remain constant as the fabric wraps around from arm front to arm front.
What a great feather and down pillow that is still in great shape.
The center emblem trimmed out clean and crisp.
 looking down the front line.
What a great functional piece of furniture.
