77 Years In Service

I figure this chair is from the 1930s. After removing all the original tacks this has never been reupholstered before. In all my years of home furnishings restoration work I have never seen two different fabrics mixed together on an old piece like this. This really is a grand piece with wide flat arm tops, a hand sewn bullnose front with really nice carvings.

The owner asked that I Re-sew the original creator's tag back into the decking.
After replacing all the old bottom base webbing, crimping the bottom Coils in place, it's time to re-tie the top springs.

The burlap and weddings for the inside arms also needs rebuilding. And of course saving the original straw stuffings which seem like they have not aged a day.
 Fresh cotton is good.
Time to restore the inside back.

These old spring nosings on the deck don't get much more complicated. Lots of handsewing for sure.

The outsides are backed and lined.

This piece tops off nicely with the best dustcover money can buy.
This piece deserves a Marshall unit seat cushion wrapped in cotton. What a inexact science it is to put one of these together properly.
 Matching front belting.
The same fabric coordination that was used over 70 years ago.
This leopard designed fabric was on the original upholstery. I found a match in my fabric books.
I will make up some large arm covers and put traditional decorative nails on top of the gimp and this piece is ready to serve.
The exposed wood cleaned up real nice with Howard's restore finish.

Thanks for looking here.
